Abba's Ragamuffin

I am slowly being refined. I love university. And reading. And writing. And discovering that right when I think I "got" something down, I fall flat on my face only to find a new perspective.

"The way we are with each other is the truest test of our faith. How I treat a brother or sister from day to day, how I react to the sin-scarred wino on the street, how I respond to the interuption from people I dislike, how I deal with normal people in their normal confusion on a normal day may be a better indication of my reverence for life than the antiabortion sticker on the bumper of my car.
We are not pro-life simply because we are warding off death. We are pro-life to the extent that we are men and women for others, all others; to the extent that no human flesh is a stranger to us; to the extent that we can touch the hand of another in love; to the extent that for us there are no 'others.'
Today the danger of the pro-life position, which I vigorously support, is that it can be frighteningly selective. The rights of the unborn and the dignity of the age-worn are pieced of the same pro-life fabric. We weep at the unjustified destruction of the unborn. Did we also weep when the evening news reported from Arkansas that a black family had been shotgunned out of a white neighborhood?
One morning I experienced a horrifying hour. I tried to remember how often between 1941 and 1988 I wept for a German or Japanese, a North Korean or North Vietnamese, a Sandanista or Cuban. I could not remember one. Then I wept not for them, but for myself.
When we laud life and blast abortionists, our credibility as Christians is questionable. On one hand we proclaim the love and anguish, the pain and joy that goes into fashioning a single child. We proclaim how precious each life is to God and should be to us. On the other hand, when it is the enemy that shrieks to heaven with his flesh in flames, we do not weep, we are not shamed; we call for more.
The sensitive Jew remember the Middle Ages - every ghetto structured by Christians, every forced baptism, every Good Friday program, every portrait of Shylock exacting his pound of flesh, every identifying dress or hat or badge, every death for conscience's sake, every back turned or shoulder shrugged, every sneer and slap and curse.
With their tragic history as background, it is not surporising that many Jews are unimpressed with our anti-abortion stance and our arguments for the sacredness of human life. For they still hear cries of "Christ-killer!" The survivors of Auschwitz and Dachau still feel lashes on their backs; they still see images of human soap, still taste hunger, still smell gas. The history of Judaisim is a story of caring: They are not sure we care for them.
The pro-life position is a seamless garment of reverence for the unborn and the age-worn, for the enemy, the Jew, and the quality of life of all people. Otherwise, it is paste jewelry and sawdust hot dogs."

It's All Proclaiming Who You Are

Last night a group of my best friends went down to the ocean cliffs to watch the meteor shower.

It was my favorite night at Point Loma so far.

In a brilliant display of God's beauty and power we watched meteors streak across the sky. As I laid down on blankets with my friends, listening to music, I began to think how small I really am. That night, it was as if God was creating a masterpiece just for us. The vastness of our galaxy and the sky above were spread out above us and as God created this spectacular show, I thanked Him for creating such a complex world. With each meteor we saw, we screamed various ooohs and awwss and wows! Our reactions were the same each and every time. And as I was looking up at the night sky, I had the thought that God screams ooohs and awwss and wows when He sees us striving and running after Him. God's beauty is all around us and I am thankful I experienced it last night at the perfect moment in time with the perfect group of pals.

I Love Butta

So about once a week I make a waffle in the cafeteria with one of their handy waffle makers. I would lather on, what I thought was, butter from a small plastic spray bottle next to the waffle cooker. Today, after being at school for who knows how long, I learned that the spray butter was actually the spray used on the waffle machine to keep the waffle from sticking. I HAD BEEN SPRAYING FRICKIN' PAM ON MY WAFFLES!

Ohhhhhh how embarrassing...

Brushing Your Teeth?

Please do not judge me for these. I am living in a dorm with three other dudes. I can be immature and gross for at least a little while:

Dick's Last Resort

Tonight we kidnapped Ian for his birthday and took him to dinner. We blindfolded him and as we walked on the streets of Downtown guiding him about five blocks to the restaurant, my friend Julia made the funniest comment. I yelled to the group that we should ditch blind Ian and run away.

Julia shouts, "I wonder what Ian would do!?"

"Julia, he would take off the blindfold..."

Feliz Cumpleanos!

Not necessarily a funny story, but one that I personally enjoyed being a part of this past week:

On Tuesday night I went out with Bread of Life to visit my friends living on the streets in Downtown. While handing out meals I realized how important and how unlike any ministry I have served with in the past compares with this one. Our evening started by having a birthday celebration for Pedro, a man who turned fifty the day before. As we sang "Happy Birthday" to him in Spanish a glimpse of the kingdom came into my mind. We were doing ministry as Jesus had so once intended. While we by no means changed his life, we were living life with him and showing him  how we didn't care where he came from or how he even ended up on the streets. Simply, we were there to show him how we love him and wanted to be with him to celebrate his day of birth.

Happy Birthday Pedro!

Poker Face

On Thursday evening Taylor, Liz, and I ventured out to see Passion Pit perform at Soma.

The opening act was a Drag Queen cover band. Enough is already said for this to be a funny story...

The Lion King

Today, in Sociology, there was a deep group discussion on the issue of abortion. As a young woman in the class shared her insight as to how we, as Christians, should walk side by side with those facing this issue and open our homes to the mothers and children who have no where to turn to in these devastating circumstances, a high pitch scream interrupted the class.

My friend Isaiah, who reminds me so much of Big from the television show Rob and Big, (he is a big African American whose best friend is a small white dude) was scared because he thought he saw a lion outside our open class door. Turns out it was a giant cat...

Made my day...

Young B and The R-O-C Uh Oh

Last Saturday night my friends and I took an adventure to Coronado. The following is a true story, based on real events:

What an adventure we had! We boarded the shuttle from Point Loma and headed down to Old Town San Diego. From there we got on the trolley and took that to Downtown. We rushed over to the waterfront and took a ferry over to Coronado. Our adventure soon turned into a two mile hike to Hotel Del Coronado. After walking through numerous neighborhoods with cool houses and front yards, we arrived at the hotel. We began to explore the old historic hotel with its many passages and hallways, each leading to a different section of the hotel. We went up and down the oldest elevator I have ever seen all in our attempts to reach the many towers that made up the structure of the building. We never could find out how to get up to them but luckily we stumbled upon something even better!

We went outside to a patio only to find a hoppin' party going on. After inquiry we found out that The American Bar Association was throwing a convention that weekend and that tonight was a dinner party. The party had a live band and a catered buffet line. Out of sheer madness we decided to join the party and start up a dance party. We ran over to the only couple on the dance floor and began to shake it down! We were laughing so hard and as the band began to play songs such as "Play That Funky Music" and "Superstition," we broke it down. Soon, the floor was filled with middle aged couples in suits and ties, all dancing with random teenagers in jeans and t-shirts. As we formed a dance line, two friendly African American women cheered us on and shouted for us to keep going. It was about time for us to leave when my heart stopped as Beyonce entered the building, rather the band began to sing Beyonce's "Crazy in Love". I was in Heaven and it was the perfect song to end on.

We laughed so hard on the journey back to school and recounted over and over what a night we had.

Life is good...

Toad vs. Mario vs. Bowser vs. Luigi

This morning I woke up, rolled out of bed, headed over to Young Hall's rec room, ate Chipotle, and then played in the Mario Kart Tournament.

Don't get excited. Out of the three rounds I played, I got fourth each time.

Damn Luigi, you always let me down...

Where The Wild Things Are

Today my roommate Taylor and I woke up to the sound of his alarm clock, ready to begin a day of bargaining and hustling. We walked two doors down, woke up Kevin, and after a quick shower, walked out the door with our game faces on. We were on our way to the swap meet in Chula Vista.

Upon arrival, the possibilities of how we were going to decorate our room only multiplied after viewing the sheer amount of tents in place at this location. We began walking up and down the rows and soon came upon our first purchase. In front of us was a masterpiece (a crappy poster on cardboard)! The painting depicted an African man holding a small child in his arms. We quickly picked the piece up only to find another great find, an African landscape with elephants in the foreground. And even better, behind that poster was another with two turkeys on it! The latter has nothing to do with the theme of the others but it was only a dollar so we had to buy it.

Upon purchasing the posters, we decided to go for an African motif with accents of bamboo green. The green was added only because the bamboo we found a couple of tents over looked cool and was only fifty cents; we bought five (one for: Taylor, Kevin, Caden, Pfaff, and I). Our day was turning out great!

We moved on and soon came upon a carpet seller who proved difficult in our attempts to bargain the old man down on a rug that had just the right tones we were looking for. But alas, we had him in a head lock! We got the rug down from 29.99 to 27.00!!! Taylor and I make a great team!

Our final purchase was, what we thought at the time, a lawn ornament in the shape of a tiger. We swooped that up after getting the seller to lower the price a whole one hundred... pennies!

As we pulled away from the parking lot, grins were stretched across our faces from cheek to cheek.

THEN DISTER STRUCK!!!

When we got down the hill to Young Hall we opened our doors of Taylor's truck and went to grab our purchases. But  something horrible happened; the tiger had shattered in the back of the cab and broke two of its legs. We cried for a few minutes but decided we could lay it down on its side, as if it were resting. Our room is beginning to shape up and with a few more trips to the swap meet, we will have a true jungle in our midst. Oh, and the tiger was a very large piggy bank and not a lawn ornament.

All in all, it was a great day...
